ATTC - AT&T Local, Long Distance, Internet

Journal, Tests, Problems and Issues

  == 07/09/08
Wow, more than a year since my last note.

AT&T raised the price of Caller-ID again.
This is a service that clearly costs THEM less each year.
They are obviously trying to force YOU into a BUNDLE. No thanks.
I cancelled my Caller-Id service. I can only vote with my dollars.

I decided to check the AT&T "dry loop" offering.
I want to replace my two phone lines with something like Vonage.
After digging through many levels of web site menus I wound up with
"We're sorry but ... unavailable." Error Code: 76
Duh! Would you buy internet service from such a provider. No way!

The merger has made ATT phone and ATT DSL the same useless vendor.

I will be merging my web pages as time allows...

For now I will deal with the current issues...

     OK, why waste effort.
Here is the "How rude and stupid can you be" message of the year.

     Office is closed.
Open Monday through Friday 7AM-9PM and Saturday 8AM-5PM

Hello!!!!!! ATT is a global communications company.

In what F@#$ time zone is your office open? Duh! Double Duh!!

Problems

It all started yesterday when I attempted to help my friend set up AT&T DSL service.

The phone line was provisioned on 2006/10/30 so I didn't expect any issues there. There were no insurmountable problems. Some old telephone lines did require some change in strategy but all worked out OK.

Registering the service must be done by the user. This was a very big hassle. I can't imagine how anyone can complete the process without help from an experienced friend. More about this later...

Right now I'm dealing with the difficulty in contacting AT&T for support. AT&T DSL As part of the registration process one must set up an email account as UserName@sbcglobal.net so we did that. One must also specify an alternate email address, presumably so that if AT&T sends an important email it can be sent again if the first copy fails.

Today, I tried to access, via web mail, the email address we set up. Where do we start? There was no documentation whatsoever as to how to log into the web mail. I did try as many URLs as I could conceive:
http://sbcglobal.com
http://sbcglobal.net
http://sbcyahoo.net
http://sbcyahoo.com
http://sbc.com
http://att.com
and got the usual 404 - Page Not Found response.

Not knowing where to start I went to http://att.com and after wading through several screens I somehow wound up at AT&T Yahoo! Help Home.

You might find it OK that the page entitled "AT&T Yahoo! Help - Home" is found at http://help.sbcglobal.net/index.php I found it counter-intuitive. But, I dirgress...

Click Here for the trail I followed to find the URL for web mail. I tried to send a comment regarding this issue -- more below.

By a lucky guess I finally found the URL in:
How can I read my mail from another computer?
http://help.sbcglobal.net/article.php?item=7085

I did manage to login to the email account.

There was one message.

It told my how to access my email account.

Which came first? The chicken or the egg?

Did any of this information go to the alternate email account -- NO!

OK, I promised to tell you why I'm so annoyed below.
1. I logged on to the web site.
2. I selected the Contact Us by email link.
3. I filled out the form with oodles of irrelevant information.
4. I clicked Send and the system said try later.

Go to the QuickLinks section for the various screens. I'm tired now.

The bottom line is you must struggle to find anything.
You must struggle to let AT&T know about it.
You must struggle to use AT&T DSL.
